Michelada {Mexican Bloody Mary}
Enjoy a cold and refreshing Michelada on a hot sunny day. It’s a classic mexican drink made with beer and other delicious flavors. It’s easy, quick and your guests will love it! Cheers!
Today I’m bringing you one of Sean’s all time favorite summer drinks. Since moving to Vegas almost 7 years ago we’ve yet to find a Michelada at any of the Mexican restaurants. Its made different everywhere you go, but most Michelada have some basic kitchen staples such as:
- Lime Juice
- Tajin seasoning for inside the drink and the rim of the glass
- Worcestershire sauce
- Hot Sauce
- Clam juice – Clamato brand
This drink is super easy to make and tastes so good on a hot sunny day. We were first introduced to it at our hometown Mexican restaurant, La Casita. Our favorite server, Johnny introduced us to this drink and Sean hasn’t been able to go back since.
The best way to describe this drink is a fun twist on a bloody mary. When I say fun twist, I really mean a FUN twist. This drink uses beer instead of liquor, which is my favorite part of this drink. I’m not a big liquor girl, but bring in beer and wine and I’m sold!
You can use whatever beer you have on hand, but if you’re buying beer just for this drink, I would recommend some of these.
Mexican Beer Choices:
- Dos Equis
- Pacifico
- Cornoa
- Modella
- Sol
This recipe is exactly how Sean and I like our Chavela’s. You can add more or less hot sauce. Really however your taste buds are feeling that day. I do recommend trying this particular recipe if it’s your first time ever drinking a Chavela. I want your first experience to be WOW’ed and I know this recipe will wow you.

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1/4 teaspoon Tajin seasoning
- 1 teaspoon worcestirhre sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon tapatio hot sauce
- 1/2 cup clam juice, clamato juice
- 12 ounce mexican beer, ex: dos equis
- 1-16 ounce cold beer glass
- garnish: salt and lime
Instructions
- Using half a lime, spread around rim of cold beer glass. Sprinkle salt on the rim of the glass.
- Add first five ingredients to the cold beer glass.
- Top with beer, garnish with lime and enjoy!
I think you saved the best for last…I absolutely LOVE this drink! Bloody Mary’s are my favorite. I am constantly on a search for the best bloody mary when we go out to certain restaurants, but I’ve never had this kind before. Such a fun idea, Cyndi! And I love the pretty color, too. Definitely trying this one out!

This drink has been around for a long time. I recall my mom drinking this 50 years ago., it was called a red beer. There variations with different beers and formulations with tabascio, garlic salt, worcestershire sauce or horseradish. My favorite mix is Mr snd Mrs T’s….amazing flavor. I have even seen strips of bacon invghem.,., tasty.
The reason they “don’t have it” in Las Vegas is that it is called a Michelada, not a Chavela. If you had known what to ask for they would have been able to serve it. You are calling it by the wrong name.
I’m from San Diego originally and a Chavela and Michelada are made completely different. Hence why I was looking for a Chavela here in Vegas. But now I can make it myself. So much better homemade anyways. Thanks.

Yea I’m from San Diego, CA originally and a Chavela and Michelada are made completely different. If you went to our favorite Mexican restaurant they would make you 2 different drinks, but maybe that’s cause we’re so close to Mexico. Who knows, but whatever the name is I love this drink. So refreshing on a hot summer day, don’t you think. 🙂
Do you know what exactly how they made Micheladas differently? The ingredients you posted are all in a Michelada. The only difference is your traditional Michelada comes with tajin around the rim in place of salt. I asked my boyfriend, who was born and raised most of his life in Mexico, had no idea what I was talking about when I asked what the difference was.
